History of Ceylon Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a widely used spice and there are many varieties of cinnamon found around the world. Among them there are two main varieties; Ceylon Cinnamon (Cinnamomum Verum Presl/Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume) and the other widely available variety Cassia Cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia / Cinnamomum aromaticum).

Coumarin the organic compound found in many plants. This compound is what makes Cinnamon have its pharmacological properties such as antiflammatory, antioxidant, antihyperglycermic, antiadipogenic, anti-bacterial, and anti-cancer properties.

According to several studies by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR)^[1], it’s been found that Ceylon cinnamon has ultra-low coumarin content (0.004%) while cassia cinnamon in contrast has a higher content (5%) of coumarin making the latter potentially dangerous if consumed in high amounts as it may cause damage to the liver.
